Application planning note · Plastic components for optical assemblies

Separate optical requirements from mechanical requirements

A lens barrel, optical housing and transparent optical element require different acceptance criteria. Identify the function of each component and mark optical surfaces, locating surfaces and cosmetic surfaces separately on the drawing.

What to include in the enquiry

  • Material: exact resin grade, color, permitted alternatives and any material documentation or environmental requirements.
  • Part geometry: drawing revision, 3D model, wall features, threads, snap fits and mating interfaces.
  • Optical features: where applicable, provide the optical prescription, clear aperture, wavelength range and surface requirements.
  • Mechanical features: identify datums, bores, critical steps, assembly clearances and functional alignment requirements.
  • Appearance: define cosmetic acceptance and any agreed inspection samples or viewing conditions.
  • Supply scope: clarify whether the request covers tooling, molded components, prototype parts or an assembly.

Agree how the parts will be accepted

Define dimensional, form, roughness and cosmetic requirements individually. Specify the measurement method, conditions and report format for critical features. Confirm whether samples require assembly checks or optical evaluation before a production batch is released.

Plan quantity and delivery

State prototype quantity, expected production quantities, target date and packaging requirements. Manufacturing route, tooling scope, material availability and inspection requirements are reviewed before the delivery schedule is confirmed. The general lead-time starting point of approximately one week is adjusted for the specific project; tooling and production stages need an agreed schedule.

The images illustrate component forms. This checklist does not present a measured customer case, guaranteed optical result or production yield. Project-specific acceptance limits belong in the approved drawing and quotation.
