Application planning note · Tool steel components for optical tooling

Specify the component and its interfaces

When requesting core pins, threaded cores, guide components or cavity inserts for a lens-barrel mold, provide both the individual part drawing and the relevant assembly interfaces. Confirm which components are included in the supply scope.

Questions to resolve before manufacture

  • Core pins and inserts: which surfaces form the molded part, and which locate or support the component? Identify critical steps, bores, datums and mating fits.
  • Threaded components: provide the thread standard or complete custom profile, pitch, fit requirements and inspection method. Include mating geometry when an unscrewing mechanism is involved.
  • Guides and moving interfaces: specify alignment requirements, running clearances, intended operating conditions and interchangeability requirements.
  • Tool steel: confirm the exact grade, supply condition, heat-treatment specification and final hardness requirements.
  • Finishing: identify polished, textured, coated or treated surfaces, the acceptance criteria and the stage at which dimensions must be inspected.

Define measurable acceptance criteria

List each critical dimension and tolerance on the drawing. Agree the datums, measurement conditions, reporting format and any trial assembly or fit checks. Metrixnano states precision down to 0.5 μm on suitable features after technical review; this does not apply automatically to every step, bore or thread.

Plan prototypes and repeat orders

Provide the prototype quantity, expected repeat quantities and target date. State whether sample approval is required before batch production and whether spare components must be interchangeable. Typical lead time is approximately one week, adjusted for complexity, material, heat treatment, finishing, quantity and inspection.
