Optical Mold Insert Material Selection

Optical tooling procurement guide · Updated 11 October 2026

Choose an optical mold insert material by its exact grade, working conditions, finishing route and inspection requirements. “Carbide,” “tool steel” and “nickel plated” are starting descriptions: they are not complete purchasing specifications.

Compare the material and the manufacturing route together

CandidateWhat to clarify before quotation
Tungsten carbideWC grade, binder composition, grain size, blank condition, edge geometry and required finishing process.
Tool steelExact grade and equivalent standard, heat-treatment condition, working hardness, corrosion exposure and polishing requirements.
Electroless nickel surfaceSubstrate, coating specification, thickness allowance, adhesion requirements and whether diamond turning is the intended finishing route.

Cemented carbide combines a hard phase with a metallic binder. Binder content and grain size influence its properties, so the grade matters as much as the generic material name. Source: CERATIZIT material overview.

For steel, assess the actual grade rather than assuming every mold steel has the same polishing or wear behavior. Uddeholm's Unimax product page provides a grade-specific example of these properties. Source: Uddeholm Unimax.

Electroless nickel is among the materials used for precision diamond turning, alongside materials such as aluminum and copper. That does not mean an arbitrary coating or substrate will meet a particular optical specification. Source: Corning precision diamond turning.

Write the acceptance criteria on the drawing

  • Identify the optical surface, datums and assembly interfaces.
  • Specify dimensional tolerances separately from form error and surface roughness; include evaluation area and measurement method.
  • State operating temperature, contact material, cleaning conditions and expected production quantity.
  • Confirm whether material certificates, heat-treatment records or coating records are required with delivery.

A practical quotation workflow

Send the drawing and preferred grade first. Ask the supplier to confirm the manufacturing route and any proposed material substitution in writing. For a new combination of material, geometry and surface specification, agree a sample and inspection plan before releasing the production batch. Compare quotations against the same drawing revision and acceptance criteria.

Ask Metrixnano to review your material

We review material compatibility against your drawing. Precision down to 0.5 μm applies to suitable features after technical and measurement review; it is not a roughness value or a blanket tolerance for every material. A typical lead time is around one week, adjusted for complexity, material availability and agreed inspection.
