Single-point diamond turning and process selection

Single-point diamond turning is one manufacturing route for suitable optical surfaces and precision tooling. The right process depends on the material grade, surface geometry, required finish and acceptance criteria. We review these together before confirming how your part can be made.

Tell us whether the project involves a finished optical component, an insert, a mold core or a supporting mechanical component. Where a project requires a different machining or finishing route, the proposed process is confirmed during drawing review.

Project capabilities

Item What we confirm with you
Precision Machining precision can reach 0.5 μm on suitable features. Each tolerance is agreed against the drawing, material, geometry and measurement method.
Materials Submit your required grade. Metals, tungsten carbide, ceramics, glass and plastics require different process routes; suitability is assessed for the particular component.
Optical surface Specify surface form, roughness, clear aperture and measurement conditions separately.
Quantity Prototype and production requirements are reviewed against geometry, inspection scope and repeat demand.
Lead time Typically approximately one week, adjusted for complexity, material availability, quantity and inspection. Your quotation confirms the project schedule.

From drawing to inspected part

  1. Share requirements: send a dimensioned PDF and matching CAD model; request an NDA first if needed.
  2. Review manufacturability: agree the material, critical features, process and any drawing changes.
  3. Confirm the quotation: agree quantity, inspection documentation, packaging and delivery.
  4. Manufacture and inspect: evaluate the defined features against the agreed acceptance criteria.

What to include in your request

Include drawing revision, material grade, quantity, datum system, tolerances, surface specifications, coating requirements and target delivery date. For optical surfaces, provide the optical prescription or surface definition and the intended measurement method.

Frequently asked questions

Does 0.5 μm describe roughness or every tolerance?

No. It is a machining precision capability for suitable features. Dimensional tolerance, form error and roughness are different specifications and must be agreed separately.

Can every material be diamond turned?

The process must be selected for the specific material and component. Submit the exact grade so we can assess the manufacturing route.

Is one-week delivery guaranteed?

No. Approximately one week is a typical starting point. Complexity and the agreed manufacturing and inspection scope determine the confirmed delivery date.
